How to Prevent Having a Damp Basement
A moist, cold, dark and damp basement is the ideal environment for mold growth. These molds can be pretty harmful to those who may inhale it. It is natural to find basements cold and dark since these are mostly located underground. Fortunately, smart homeowners have found a way to prevent damp basement or to keep dampness to a minimum.
1. Dehumidifier – One way of preventing a damp basement is through the use of a humidifier. A basement humidifier can keep moisture from settling in on the walls, furniture and on the floor. It can simply be tucked away in a corner of the basement and make all the difference between a dry and a cold, moist basement.
2. Sealant – Another way of fighting moist or damp basement is by using sealant to keep water out of the basement. Water can create a moist, damp environment even as it dries, making it the perfect condition for molds to grow in. Sealant can prevent water from seeping in and from the basement from becoming damp.
3. Windows – Installing several windows can allow the dampness inside the basement to air out and dry. A door that can be opened when its warm outside and closed to keep the moist out is excellent for basements.
A damp basement will be of no use unless the problem is being addressed. Aside from being harmful when inhaled, molds can also ruin walls, pool tables, walls and furniture over some time. The problem of a damp basement must be immediately addressed in order to maximize the use of the room.
